Understanding Your Pet's Journey

RESOURCE LIBRARY

What If Things Aren't Happening All of a Sudden?

The earlier you recognize meaningful change, the more opportunities you may have to help your pet.

Understanding what changes deserve attention can lead to earlier disease detection, earlier intervention, more time, better quality of life, and fewer situations where a family is caught off guard by a crisis that seemed to come out of nowhere.

This resource page is currently under construction.

In the meantime, use this video and several helpful links below that can help you better understand this topic while we continue building the full guide.

MY ENCOURAGEMENT: START EARLY

Why This Resource Exists

Starting early can lead to earlier disease detection, earlier intervention, more time, and more opportunities to keep your pet comfortable throughout the aging and illness journey. It also allows you to make informed decisions before pain, suffering, or crisis force them upon you.

Many families—and sometimes even veterinary professionals—recognize change only after it becomes obvious. By then, the pet may already be experiencing significant pain, discomfort, disability, anxiety, or declining welfare.

The earliest signs of decline are often subtle: a little more hesitation, a little less activity, changes in sleep, small shifts in behavior, altered routines, or minor changes in mobility. Individually, these signs may seem insignificant. The problem is not recognizing the symptom.

The problem is failing to recognize its significance and clues about what’s to come.

As a result, decline is often underestimated until a pet experiences severe pain, significant suffering, or a medical crisis that appears to happen "all of a sudden." In reality, these moments are often the endpoint of a process that has been developing for weeks, months, or even years.

The earlier you recognize meaningful change, the more options you have.

How to Use This Resource Library

The goal of this library is to help families become more aware and have better conversations with their veterinary team so that informed decisions happen before a pet's condition becomes inhumane or a crisis interferes with the opportunity for a peaceful ending.
